Custodian 

Hours:  (M-F) from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Pay starts at $15.00 an hour or more, depending on experience.

Job Description

The custodian reports directly to the Executive Director. Custodians support the school's goals by keeping the building and grounds clean, well-maintained, and in an orderly and safe condition. Custodians work in accordance with verbal and written instructions of the Executive Director to prioritize assigned work requests.

Rockwell expects reliability, productivity, and professionalism from its custodial staff. All staff members at Rockwell have the opportunity to improve skills, knowledge, and income over time. Staff members are expected to interact with respect and courtesy with supervisors, other staff members, students, and parents.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a high school or General Education Diploma (GED) is preferred.

  • Must be able to pass a background check.

  • Experience in handling basic maintenance repairs.

  • Experience in using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and cleaning agents.

  • Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and procedures, including handling, mixing, and using cleaning chemicals.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules.

  • Knowledge of ADA accommodations and risk management related to the building and grounds.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work at particular heights.

  • An ability to complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision.

  • Cleaning and maintenance of the Building

    • The custodian keeps the building and property in a clean and orderly condition.

    • The custodian sweeps, mops, scrubs, and or vacuums carpets and floors.

    • The custodian gathers and empties trash.

    • The custodian scrubs, sanitizes, and replenishes supplies in restrooms and other areas of the school building. 

    • The custodian performs routine cleaning, dusting, and waxing on windows, doors, sinks, baseboards, furniture, entryways, water fountains, handrails, pictures, display cases, etc.

    • The custodian performs deep, heavy cleaning based on seasonal and project requirements.

    • The custodian cleans up spills with appropriate equipment, including biohazardous waste in accordance with safety protocols and using personal safety equipment.

    • The custodian follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power machinery in accordance with school safety protocols.

    • The custodian manages the inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment with other custodial staff.

    • The custodian supports the maintenance of the building by notifying the Administration of the need for repairs or additions to areas of the building or building operating systems.

    • The custodian makes basic repairs to and performs regular maintenance on all areas of the building, including furniture, equipment, fixtures, switches, basic plumbing, basic electrical, basic carpentry, and similar.

    • The custodian paints classrooms, workspaces, and common spaces on a scheduled rotation.

    • The custodian assembles and repairs furniture, shelves, tools, playground equipment, etc.

    • The custodian services fans, filters, compressors, pumps, and other equipment, as needed.

    • The custodian operates hand and power tools for basic repairs.

    • The custodian cleans, maintains, and repairs tools and equipment used in maintenance and operations

  • Snow Removal and Grounds

    • The custodian operates snow removal equipment and shovels walkways, including clearing snow from other areas as directed by the Executive Director.

    • The custodian distributes ice melt on select sidewalks and pathways as directed by the Executive Director.

    • The custodian clears away hanging icicles and other ice formations considered potentially unsafe.   

    • The custodian ensures that the grounds are clean and orderly. 

    • The custodian cleans up and removes trash on the grounds and within the building. 

    • The custodian empties trash and recycling containers. 

    • The custodian may perform semi-skilled and skilled work on the exterior of the building to maintain the building.

Cafeteria, Kitchen, and Faculty Workroom Duties  

  • The custodian maintains faculty workrooms, offices, and the cafeteria as needed.

  • The custodian empties and cleans refrigerators and other storage or food areas as needed.

  • The custodian helps set up and take down lunch tables and assists with cleaning up the cafeteria after lunch.
